# Letters of Recommendation

**Can I write for you?**

Generally, I can write for you only if I have worked with you in a research capacity, e.g., as your dissertation or thesis advisor, dissertation committee member, or if you've written a research paper in my class. If the course(s) you took with me had a TF you should ordinarily ask your TF for the letter as they would be best able to assess your work and potential.

**Guidelines for Requesting a Letter of Recommendation**

1. Email your request at least two weeks in advance of the letter deadline (especially if I've not written for you in the past).
2. Send a separate email for each letter you need.
3. **IMPORTANT**: In the email subject line note the **deadline first**, then the letter’s purpose (e.g.: “10 October, Rhodes Scholarship”). Failure to follow this format may cause submission delays.
4. To the email, attach (in DOC or PDF format) your current CV; transcript(s); your application statement, if any (draft ok); and a description of what you're applying for, noting any specific requirements.
5. In the body of the email, be clear about HOW the letter should be submitted: online, by email, etc.
6. Please consider using an online dossier service such as [Interfolio](https://www.interfolio.com/products/dossier/), especially if you'll need more than a few letters. This service allows faculty to submit one letter that you can then use for numerous applications.
